DescriptionA communal food tray used by the South African Ismaili community. The tray was produced most likely in Rajkot by a craftsman in 1923 when Aga Khan III visited the community in Rajkot and many people from Africa visited India. The tray was gifted to the South African Jamat by Mrs. Nurbai Jamal Manjee Keshavjee and is part of the Mohamed Keshavjee Collection.
The Ismaili Jamat in South Africa started with the arrival of Jivan Keshavjee in the country in 1894. By 1896, he came to Transvaal and started the shop 'K. J. Keshavjee and company' in the heart of downtown Pretoria. Over the next 20 years, the Jamat evolved from a very basic settlement to establishing a well-organised networks of social development institutions. Pretoria, the administrative capital of South Africa became the headquarters of the Jamat and Jivan Keshavjee was the first Mukhi who founded the settlement.
