There are differing opinions among scholars regarding the use of glass weights as currency and/or as coin weights, which were often stamped with the name of the ruler. This glass weight is from the reign of Abū Tamīm Ma‘add al-Mustanṣir bi’llāh. Born in 420/1029 in Cairo, al-Mustansir bi’llāh was the eighth Fatimid caliph and eighteenth Ismaili Imam, who succeeded his father at the age of eight years. Spanning over sixty years, his caliphate and imamate was the longest of his dynasty.
